Why the human is the point

A ring outlives the hand it is made for. The jeweler works at a scale most people never see, filing and soldering and setting stones under a lamp, holding a whole design steady in the mind while the fingers do the exact small thing. The piece will mark an engagement, a loss, a fifty-year marriage. A machine can stamp a band. It cannot carry the weight of what it is for. A person makes the thing you never take off.
