Gilder
Beating light into a surface, one impossibly thin leaf of gold laid down by breath and a soft brush.
Why the human is the point
Gold leaf is thinner than this sentence is wide, so thin a breath will crumple it, and a gilder learns to move it with a charged brush and a held breath. The surface is prepared for days before the gold ever arrives, layers of gesso and clay smoothed until they are flawless, because gilding hides nothing. Then the leaf goes down and is burnished with a smooth stone until it stops looking like metal and starts looking like captured sun. Every frame, dome, and letter that glows in an old room was touched into being this slowly, by someone who refused to rush. It is devotion you can see from across a hall.
