Shepherd

Someone whose whole day is the safety of animals that cannot look after themselves.

Why the human is the point

A flock has no plan and a hundred ways to come to harm, and the shepherd stands between it and all of them. It is one of the oldest jobs there is: reading weather and ground and the mood of the animals, walking miles, counting at dusk, sitting up through a hard lambing. It is patience and presence measured in seasons, on behalf of creatures that will never understand the care. No system watches a hillside like a person who has given their life to it.
