Ferry Captain

You board, you doze, you trust. Someone at the wheel has crossed this water a thousand times.

Why the human is the point

Every crossing you barely think about, someone is thinking about hard. The captain reads the tide, the fog, the other traffic, and the weather that turned since the forecast, holding a boat full of strangers safe on water that does not forgive mistakes. It is judgment you never see, exercised on your behalf while you check your phone. The autopilot holds a heading. It does not decide, in the squall, to turn back. A person does, and gets you home.
