Swim Instructor

The calm hands in the water that teach a body to trust it, one held breath and one float at a time.

Why the human is the point

Water asks you to do the opposite of everything instinct screams, to relax when you want to grab, to breathe out when you want to hold on. A swim instructor stands chest-deep in it with you, one hand under your back, promising with their whole body that you will not go under. They know the exact moment to support and the exact moment to quietly let go, so that you learn to float before you even notice they stopped holding. For a nervous child or a grown adult who never learned, that steady presence is the whole difference between panic and a first proud glide. This is a skill that can save a life, taught by someone close enough to keep you safe while you find your own buoyancy. Few gifts are as quietly enormous as being made unafraid of deep water.
