A swim instructor stands chest-deep in it with you, one hand under your back, promising with their whole body that you will not go under. They know the exact moment to support and the exact moment to quietly let go, so that you learn to float before you even notice they stopped holding. For a nervous child or a grown adult who never learned, that steady presence is the whole difference between panic and a first proud glide.
