Why the human is the point

Medicine can be measured, dosed, and scheduled. The night cannot. Somewhere past midnight, what a person needs is not another reading but a presence: someone who has kept this watch a thousand times and stays anyway. A nurse reads breath and skin and fear, and answers all three. The machines beep to the nurse. The nurse comes to you.
