For hours, one person does nothing but watch the water so you can forget to.
Why the human is the point
The whole beach is at ease because one person refuses to be. The lifeguard scans the water for the hours you spend not thinking about drowning, reads a rip current you cannot see, and is already moving before you know you are in trouble. It is vigilance as a job: boring until the two minutes that are not, when a stranger's life depends on a human having watched, and swum, and known what to do. No camera pulls a child from the surf. A person does.
